Georgian Broad Street and High Street properties hide their drainage behind parapets. Lead-lined box gutters, secret gutters and internal downpipes were designed to be maintained and frequently have not been — when they block or the lead splits, water tracks down inside the wall and shows up as damp in a bedroom corner far from the actual defect.
